Line up the notch with your pencil mark and drill. That is genuinely it. I built a bookcase with dowelled shelves and every hole came out centred on the stock without me measuring twice.

The pin trick for spacing is the part worth paying for. Drill one hole, drop the pin in it, slide down and drill the next. Evenly spaced holes along a whole shelf edge with no layout marks at all.

Works well and the steel sleeves feel solid. Took me two or three practice holes in scrap to get a feel for how much clamp pressure it wants, so do that first rather than on your good stock.

Bought it for 3/4 plywood carcass work and it self-centres on that thickness perfectly. Also used it on some 2 inch stock for a workbench and it still clamped fine, no wandering.

The three sleeve sizes cover everything I actually use. 1/4 for small trim, 3/8 for anything structural. Nice not having to buy a separate jig per dowel size.

First dowel joints I have ever cut and they closed up with no gap. The aluminium body has enough weight to it that it sits where you put it instead of skating around.

Good jig, does what it says. My only note is the sleeves are small enough to lose in a shop vac, so keep the little bag they come in. Accuracy has been spot on across maybe eighty holes.

Cabinet doors and face frames, dozens of holes, no drift. Faster than pocket screws for edge joints and it leaves nothing showing on the outside.
